Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is a spacecraft developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) to supply and service the International Space Station (ISS). The ATV is launched using an Ariane 5 rocket and is capable of carrying up to 7.6 tons of cargo, including food, water, fuel, and scientific experiments.
The ATV is designed to autonomously dock with the ISS and stay attached to the station for several months before eventually burning up in the Earth’s atmosphere upon re-entry. It uses a combination of GPS, laser rangefinders, and cameras to navigate and dock with the station.
The ATV is an important part of the ISS resupply program, providing essential supplies and equipment to the astronauts living on the station. It has made a total of five successful missions to the ISS, with the last one in 2014.
